As you know, anime that is getting the most attention right now is My Deer Friend Nokotan!

I can see many people dance to the OP song on YouTube.

My Deer Friend Nokotan is easy to understand in English, but in Japanese, different title and meaning.

I’ll introduce you the Japanese title and meaning of My Deer Friend Nokotan here.

Meaning of Japanese Title of My Deer Friend Nokotan!

Japanese title of My Deer Friend Nokotan is しかのこのこのここしたんたん.

It is Shikanokonokonoko Koshitantan in English.

Before watching anime, even I couldn’t understand the meaning at all.

After watching the anime, I could understand at least Shikanokonoko and Koshitan.

Shikanokonoko is the name of the main character.

Shikanoko Noko came from her name 鹿乃子のこ.
しかのこのこ in Hiragana.

But why one more Noko added in the end of her name in the title?
I myself actually don’t know why.

For Koshitan, that’s a nickname of her friend.

Her real name is Koshi Trako.
虎視虎子 in Chinese character and こしとらこ in Hiragana.

Shikanoko Noko gave her the nickname Koshitan.

This ~tan is sometimes used for a nickname.
Like Hiro-tan for Hiromi, Kimi-tan for Kimiko, Yuka-tan for Yukakoi, etc.

By adding tan at the end of the name, it makes the name sound a kind of cute.

This koshitantan is also a four character idiom although I don’t know they named the title to imply this idiom as well

Four character idiom of Koshitantan is written 虎視眈眈 (こしたんたん) in Kanji.

虎視眈眈 means to take advantage of an enemy or opponent’s opportunity, and to wait for the right moment.

Back to the title, tan is also added to the end of Koshitan if the title was made just from the nickname.
Again, I don’t know the reason.

But I think Japanese title was made based on the characters names, Shikanoko Noko and Koshitan.
